Companies producing innovative products typically terminate all advertising and promotion (A&P) of branded products once generics have been launched. This may be prudent since branded sales often decline 50%-75% in the first year following generic introduction. Our primary hypothesis was that companies, which cease A&P on products about to be genericized, might indirectly hasten branded product sales decline by increasing the relative share of competitors' promotional activity.
